Each bossfight feels fresh and unique compared to the last, each using in their own way the skills and techniques that previous areas and bosses have taught you. Yet each and every boss’s theme had me grooving in my seat, and felt like they really set the tone of the fight that was unfolding. In general I found the game’s chapter music to be decent, though not of particular note. That being said, the bosses themselves are phenomenal. Bosses can also never be challenged again once defeated, requiring a new playthrough should you wish to do so. The game also isn’t especially friendly to backtrackers, as 2 of the 11 chapters are actually made unplayable once completed on a specific save file.
Combined with the lack of a New Game+ feature, this could possibly make replaying the game difficult for some. The expanded movement options do make it a bit awkward to start a new playthrough of the game, as movement will feel almost sluggish in comparison to when you finished your last playthrough. That being said, it is worth stressing that thanks to the previously mentioned way the game introduces and offers ways to use these dynamic movement options, it never feels overwhelming. Ultimately, this means that the game ends up as a significantly more dynamic platformer than when it starts (this end state giving me a vague sense of similarity to Celeste as mentioned prior).

Thanks to this, you come out with an expanded sense of the game’s mechanics, and a nifty minor upgrade to go along with it. These will contain some sort of puzzle or challenge, requiring you to experiment with and learn about the upgrade you’ve just received. To reinforce this, the game will often present you with not-so-subtly hidden secret areas after you get a new movement ability. This allows you to adapt to rooms and clear them faster than you ever could before. Whether by accident or on purpose, you’ll eventually be able to realize the ways that enemy placements and room structures were designed for you to chain your attacks and movement.
What it does do, is subtly reveal to you that it has been planning for you to get these upgrades all along. It doesn’t even force you to use it’s special movement half the time. It never coddles you, it never puts a tutorial on a plate and spoon feeds it to you. No Tutorial NeededĪnother aspect where the game shines is how it teaches the player. This is where I personally had the most fun, repeatedly labbing out the fastest and most effective way to move through stages using the tools given. In true ninja fashion, you’ll be dashing, jumping, and slicing your way around. The game slowly goes from the floor being your platform, to everything being your platform. Though you pick up many combat based upgrades over the course of the game, some of them have secondary movement purposes, while others are just straight up movement upgrades. Feeling like a ninjaĪs the game progresses however, the gameplay shifts slightly.

This allows for a fun and accessible chapter of problem solving, while not punishing you for working through figuring out how to get through the current area.
